Karl HansonR. Karl Hanson, Ph.D., is Senior Research Officer for the Solicitor General of Canada and an Adjunct Professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. He has published over thirty research journal articles, numerous chapters in edited books and nine government documents. Dr. Hanson became internationally recognized as a leader in the field of sex offender re-offense prediction for his and Monique Bussiere's groundbreaking meta-analysis of re-offense risk assessment. From that and his other research, he has since developed the Rapid Risk Assessment of Sexual Offense Recidivism, the Static-99, and the Sex Offender Need Assessment Rating.

Thomsa GrissoThomas Grisso, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts, where is the Director of Forensic Training and Research. He has published eight books and over 100 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Grisso's professional contributions encompass the field of psychology, psychiatry and the law, many of which focus on improving fornesic assessment and treatment. He is an internationally recognized expert on the ethics of psychological assessment.

Minnesota Sex Offender Screening Tool-Revised (1 hour, 36 minutes)

Douglas EppersonDouglas Epperson, Ph.D., is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Psychology Department at Iowa State University. He has published two dozen journal articles, and is the primary author of the Minnesota Sex Offender Screening Tool (MnSOST) and its successor, the Minnesota Sex Offender Screening Tool-Revised (MnSOST-R). The MnSOST-R recently has emerged as the sex offender risk assessment instrument with the greatest predictive validity for adult male, non-incest offenders.

Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol (J-SOAP) (1 hour, 22 minutes)

Robert PrentkyRobert Prentky, Ph.D., is the Director of Assessment and Training at the Justice Resource Institute in Massachusetts. He has researched and taught about sex offenders thoughout his career and has administered 11 federally-funded grants. His research findings have been published in over 40 journal articles and 17 academic book chapters. Dr. Prentky and his colleagues recently developed the Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol (JSOAP), which is the only empirically-validated sex offender recidivism risk assessment instrument for use with juvenile offenders.

David ThorntonDavid Thornton, Ph.D., is the Head of Programs for Her Majesty's Prison Service in England. He designed, implemented and administers the largest coordinated correctional sex offender program in the world. He is an active researcher who has systematically examined countless issues in the field of sex offender assessment and treatment. Dr. Thornton has published two books, seven chapters in edited books and 11 research journal articles. He developed the Structured Risk Assessment (SRA), the Structured Anchored Clinical Judgment (SACJ), and is the co-developer (with R. Karl Hanson) of the Static-99.

Conducting the Risk Prediction Evaluation; Writing the Report; Testifying in Court; Comparing the Risk Assessment Instruments (46 minutes)

Dennis DorenDennis Doren, Ph.D., is the Evaluation and Development Director at the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Wisconsin, where he administers the Sexually Violent Persons Unit. He has performed and testified about sex offender risk assessment evaluations throughout the United States. Dr. Doren wrote a book on psychopathy and has published over a dozen journal articles. He has systematically synthesized, compared and correlated the various sex offender risk assessment instruments. As an evaluator and supervisor, he participates in the Sexually Violent Person civil commitment process from assessment to report writing to forensic testimony.

Psychopathy as a Sex Offender Risk Predictor (1 hour, 2 minutes)

Robert HareRobert Hare, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. As the world's leading authority on psychopathy, he has refined, developed and operationalized the clinical construct of psychopathy. Dr. Hare is the author of over 100 research articles and several books. He has been recognized as a world leader and contributor to the reduction of violence, including his recently having been awarded the Queen Sophia of Spain Silver Medal for his research on psychopathy. He is the author of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), and is the co-author of the Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version (PCL:SV) and the P-Scan, a non-clinical tool for assessing psychopathic traits.

Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG); Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide (SORAG) (1 hour, 45 minutes)

Vernon QuinseyVernon L. Quinsey, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He is internationally recognized as an outstanding scholar in the field of actuarial risk assessment for violence and has advocated using actuarially-based risk assessments since 1979. Dr. Quinsey has administered 16 research grants and has published six books, over 100 journal articles and 20 book chapters. He and colleagues developed the Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG), an actuarial re-offense risk assessment for sexual and violent offenses. He also developed the Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide (SORAG).
